YOUR SIZE

Type your print’s width and height, or tap one of the eight presets: Poster 200×200, Landscape 200×150, Small 150×150, Tile 100×100, Half 100×200, 2:3 133×200, 3:4 149×200, 9:16 112×200. The frame comes out at your print plus 4.5 mm, so a 200×200 print gets a 204.5 mm frame. Anywhere from 98 mm to 595 mm works.

Measure how thick your print is and type it in. Frame Studio picks the pocket that holds it — 1.48, 2.40, 3.20 or 4.00 mm — and builds the frame around it.

It still locks to the one you printed last year

Some of you are going to read “custom size” and think, “Vic, then it won’t clip onto the ones I already printed.” Fair question. It’s the first thing I’d want to know too.

Frame Studio doesn’t scale the frame. It warps it. Only the straight, featureless runs of rail get stretched — the boring middle bits with nothing on them. Every corner, every connector socket, every retention dot and the keyhole on the back gets picked up and moved across, unchanged. Same geometry it’s always had.

So a 340 mm frame you generate this afternoon clips straight onto a 204.5 mm frame you printed a year ago. Same connectors, same sockets, same fit. Build your wall out over time and every piece still talks to every other piece.

Deeper pockets work the same way. A thicker pocket is cut into the part, not stretched out of it — so a 4 mm-pocket frame is still 10 mm thick and still mates with a stock frame straight off MakerWorld.

Measure the edge, not the middle

Four pocket depths. The tool picks one for you. Your job is to hand it the right number.

The pockets are 1.48 · 2.40 · 3.20 · 4.00 mm. You type your thickness, and Frame Studio gives you the shallowest pocket that clears it. A 3.28 mm print gets the 4.00 pocket, not the 3.20.

Some of you are going to look at that and think, “Vic, 3.28 is basically 3.20.” And I get it. But the pocket has to clear the print, not tie with it. A hair over and your print sits proud, and the frame won’t close down on it.

Now the part everybody gets wrong. Measure the edge of your print, not the middle. Where the wall meets the seat there’s a 45-degree chamfer, and the edge of your print lands on that chamfer. That’s why the real clearance in the stock published frame is 1.48 mm, even though the flat seat measures 1.625. The edge is what sits under the retention dots — so the edge is the number that matters.

Measuring the middle instead of the edge is the one thing on this page that will cost you a print. So it is very, very worth the calipers. Measure a corner, type that in. And if it comes out and your print doesn’t sit right — it’s okay. Remeasure, rebuild, download again. It costs you nothing.

The dots

Twelve retention dots hold your print in place — three per rail, at centre and at plus and minus 50 mm. Below 136 mm the frame swaps to a one-dot-per-rail family instead, all the way down to a 102 mm frame.

It tells you before you download

Pick your printer and Frame Studio checks the frame against your plate before you commit. Thirty-two machines, read straight out of their own shipped slicer profiles. If a 420 mm frame isn’t going to land on your bed, you find that out here — not forty minutes into a slice.

Quick note on what it’s checking: the plate footprint, width by height. It doesn’t check build height. And the STL comes out already flat and the right way up, keyhole face on the plate, so there’s nothing to rotate.

The settings I print these at: 0.2 mm layers, 2 walls, 15% infill, no supports. The support inside the connector sockets is part of the model — print it, then poke it out with a pair of clippers.

Frame mode is free. The other half of Frame Studio — the light box — lives in HueForge Pro. Same frame on the front, but the part becomes a solid enclosure you drop LEDs into. Depth runs 26 to 130 mm front to back, 50 by default; go under 48.1 mm and the LEDs start showing as dots, so the tool tells you. It prints floor-down with no supports, and there’s a 16 mm push-out hole dead centre through the floor so the thing actually comes off the plate. The front 10 mm is the frame, so a light box still keys straight into a plain frame.
